KDP export guidance
Prepare a KDP-ready draft. These are preparation tips — they are not a guarantee of final KDP approval.
Full-color interior
Children's books use full-color interior printing. Expect higher per-copy print cost than black-and-white.
Bleed vs. no-bleed
Art that runs to the page edge needs full bleed (add ~0.125" beyond trim). Framed art with white margins can be no-bleed.
Common trim sizes
Popular picture-book trims: 8.5 × 8.5, 8 × 10, and 8.5 × 11 inches.
Larger text, fewer words
Use larger type and fewer words per page so early readers (and read-alouds) can follow along.
Image-safe margins
Keep important art and text inside the safe margin so nothing critical is trimmed or lost in the gutter.
Cover readability
Make the title bold and legible as a thumbnail — most shoppers first see a small cover image.
